Color correction is one of the most technically demanding services in hairstyling — and one of the most misunderstood. If you've had a DIY color disaster, or if a previous salon left your hair an unintended shade, here's everything you need to know before booking a correction.
What is Color Correction?
Color correction is any service designed to fix hair color that is:
- ›The wrong shade (too orange, too green, too dark, uneven)
- ›Unevenly applied (patchy, striped, or banded from box dye buildup)
- ›Impossible to achieve the desired result on without removal first
It is not a single service — it is a process, often spanning multiple appointments.
Common Scenarios We Correct
Over-darkened hair: Box dye builds up artificial pigment that resists normal color processes. Removing it requires a color remover or controlled bleach.
Brassy or orange tones: Typically a result of incomplete lightening. A toner in the right cool or violet base neutralizes brassiness.
Uneven DIY color: The most complex case. Regrowth, banding, and multiple overlapping dye layers require careful sectioning and targeted application.
Green from bleach: Chlorine in pool water reacts with certain lightened shades. A protein treatment + targeted toning resolves this.
What to Bring to Your Consultation
Be completely honest about your color history:
- ›Every box dye you've used in the past 2 years (brand and shade)
- ›Any bleach or DIY highlights
- ›Any at-home glosses or color-depositing products
- ›How many previous salon color services you've had
Concealing this information leads to incorrect formulation and can cause irreversible damage.
How Long Does Color Correction Take?
Mild corrections (brassiness, slight uneven tone): 2–3 hours.
Moderate corrections (significant regrowth, banded color): 4–5 hours.
Complex corrections (box dye buildup, multiple incorrect layers): 2–3 sessions over 4–6 weeks.
Managing Expectations
Color correction often requires compromise. If your hair is severely over-processed, the safest path to your desired color may take multiple visits. Trying to rush a correction in one session risks catastrophic breakage.
Sir George will give you a realistic assessment during consultation — including the number of sessions needed, the expected end result, and whether a bond therapy treatment alongside the correction is necessary to protect hair integrity.
