At Beauty Essentials, ombré and balayage are two of our most requested color services — and they're often confused for each other. Here's exactly how they differ and how to choose.
What is Ombré?
Ombré means "shaded" in French. It's a gradient technique where the hair transitions from a darker shade at the roots to a lighter shade at the ends. The transition is usually more defined and dramatic — you can clearly see where one color ends and another begins.
Best for: Clients who want a bold, noticeable transformation. Works beautifully on dark Filipino hair because the contrast creates striking visual depth.
Maintenance: Moderate. As roots grow, the gradient naturally extends downward. Touch-ups every 3–4 months.
What is Balayage?
Balayage (pronounced "bal-ee-AHZH") is a freehand painting technique. The colorist literally paints lightener directly onto sections of the hair to mimic how the sun would naturally lighten it. The result is softer, less structured, and more dimensional than ombré.
Best for: Clients who want a natural, effortless look. Perfect for clients who want low maintenance — because balayage grows out beautifully without harsh lines.
Maintenance: Low. The soft, diffused growth line means touch-ups can wait 4–6 months.
